Contradictions

A contradiction is a statement or phrase that asserts or implies both the truth and falsity of something. Both parts of a contradiction cannot possibly be true. A round square is a contradiction in terms.

Some say that to say God is one and God is three is a contradiction. How can that be? I believe that we are not dealing with a contradiction as much as we are a misunderstanding of a spiritual, Biblical mystery. I too struggled with this and heard several explanations that were insufficient for me. Some explained that it's like an egg which has a shell, white and yolk. Ok. BUT, they are not all the same entity at the same time. Others compare water which can be liquid, gas and solid. OK. BUT the same body or portion of water is not liquid, gas and solid at the same time. For God to be three and yet one all at the same time is indeed a mystery and can only be understood by divine revelation.

However, God has given us evidence in the universe of this "tri-unity". This is covered in a rare book that I was able to purchase by Robert Woods entitled "The Secret of the Universe". Consider any object, no matter how large or small. It has length, width and depth all at the same time. Take away any one aspect of the object and the object ceases to exist. Consider time. It consists of the past, present and the future. Take away any one aspect of time and time ceases to exist. The third is a little more complicated but still understandable. It is energy in motion creating phenomenon. Take away any one of the aspects and it ceases to exist.

Yes, I believe that God is one, yet three by divine revelation and faith in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The biblical concept is that at any given point in time God is all three, that God exists in a permanent, eternal, trinity. Father, Son and Spirit each eternally present, each eternally existing in relationship with the other. For me it is not a contradiction. See Luke 3:22 where it references God the Father speaking, as Jesus who is God (Hebrews 1:8) is being baptized and the Holy Spirit who is God (Matthew 3:16 and Matthew 28:19) descending from heaven.

1. Height and Length and Depth 2.Past, present and future; 3. Energy in motion creating phenomenon. Take away any of the elements and they cease to exist.
